Should You Learn SAS in 2020? (for Data Science)

In this video, I talk about the SAS statistical software in 2020 as it relates to data science. We answer the question – if you’re a coming, aspiring data scientist, is this something you should learn?

I did a video on R vs. Python last month. Here it is if you missed it: https://youtu.be/ZGeLAqGkObw
I also spoke about the Julia programming language: https://youtu.be/TPC-5gsqaAk
Similarly, I did a video on why you should use an open-source language in the first place: https://youtu.be/7mgML9HkeZE

However, SAS is everywhere. It’s worth looking at how popular it really is in the data science and data analytics world compared to R and Python, and it seems to be falling in the TIOBE index compared to R and Python. Similarly, it has fallen to where it is in only about 1/2 of the job descriptions that R is (which is half of Python’s).

Burtch Works did a survey in 2020 to assess the preference of analytics professionals and data scientists for these three languages. This is also broken down by things like industry, experience, etc. They found that certain industries still use SAS more than others, but by and large, people with less than 10 years’ experience are not using SAS at nearly the numbers that more veteran professionals are.
